Bapu - the artist
Sattriraju Lakshmi Narayana, also known as Bapu was born on 14th of December in 1933 in Narsapur, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. He graduated as a lawyer from University of Madras in 1955. He joined as political cartoonist for the newspaper Andhra Patrika in 1955. He later went on to become designer, movie director and a popular painter.
Painting Style
Bapu introduced a new style of paiting using simple bright colours which are easy on the eye. His unique style of economy of strokes, freehand drawing and non-usage of background clutter made the paintings simple, beautiful and popular. He specializes in Hindu mythology characters and has painted the Hindu epic Ramayana as a pictorial story. In his paintings, characters like Shiva, Bhima, Duryodhana look distinctly male with wide chests, bigger jaws and large biceps, while Krishna and Rama have a tinge of feminish sensitivity. All his female characters (including Hindu Godesses) have deer like eyes, a Physical attractiveness, voluptuous breasts, long hair and a sharp nose. Infact, the phrase Bapu Bomma (Bapus painting) has become synonymous with a beautiful girl in Telugu. Another character called Rendu Jedala Seetha (Seetha, a girl with two plaits) later became a synonym with any girl wearing two plaits. Bapu has also introduced a new cursive writing in Telugu which is probably the only alternative to the more traitional print font in Telugu.
Collaborations with other artists
He worked with Sankaramanchi and drew hundered and one pictures for each of the stories in Amaravati Kathalu. He collaborated with comic writer Mullapudi Venkata Ramana and gave life to Mullapudis characters Budugu and his family in the form of pictures.
Movies
Bapu has directed movies like Sampoorna Ramayanam (The complete Ramayana), Pelli Pustakam (The book of marriage), Saakshi (witness), Mr.Pellam (Mr.Wife) and Tyagayya (a biopic on the life of Saint Tyagaraja)
Other works
Bapu is said to have designed some saris too. The collection of saris used in the 1991 movie Pelli Pustakam were designed by Bapu.
Awards and Acclaim
Bapu was awarded the Raghupathy Venkaiah award by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh for his outstanding contribution to Telugu cinema in 1986. He shared the award along with his soul-mate Mullapudi. Another popular work in Telugu Koonalamma Padalu (Poems from Everyday people) has the following in praise of Bapu:

కొంటె బొమ్మల బాపు

కొన్ని తరముల సేపు

గుండె ఊయలలూపు

ఓ కూనలమ్మ

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is the fifth largest State in India, both in area and population. Its area is 2,75,048 sq.km. and the population according to 1991 Census is 6,65,08,008, comprising 3,37,24,581 males and 3,27,83,427 females. Density is 242 persons per sq.km. and the literacy is 44.08 per cent.
The State is surrounded by Madhya Pradesh and Orissa in the north, the Bay of Bengal in the east, Tamilnadu and Karnataka in the south and Maharashtra in the west. Andhra Pradesh forms the major link between the north and the south. The northern area of Andhra Pradesh is mountainous with an annual rainfall of 110 to 125 cm. The highest peak Mahendragiri rises 1500 m. (4,920 ft.) above the sea level. The climate is generally hot and humid. The State is principally fed by the southwest monsoon. The northeast monsoon contributes about one-third of the rainfall.
Krishna and Godavari are the major river systems in the State. Godavari is the biggest in terms of length and breadth among the rivers of South India. Tungabhadra is an important tributary of the Krishna. Other important rivers are the Pennar, Vamsadhara and Nagavali. All these rivers are rainfed, and are of great economic significance because of their hydelpower and irrigation potential.
History:
The study of history reveals that major portion of the southern India (Dakshina Padham) was extended by Andhra region. Several dynasties ruled over this part of the country.
Historically the earliest mention of the Andhras appeared in the Aitareya Brahmana (B.C.800). It was called Dakshina Padh during those days. Historians felt that Andhras, Pulindas, Sabaras, and many other sects lived in Dakshina Padh. But it is only in the Mauryan age that one gets historical evidence of the Andhras as a political power in the southeastern Deccan. Megasthenese, who visited the Court of Chandragupta Maurya (B.C.322-297), mentioned that Andhra country had 30 fortified towns and an army of 1,00,000 infantry, 2,000 cavalry and 1,000 elephants. Buddhist books reveal that Andhras established their kingdoms on the Godavari belt at that time. Asoka referred in his 13th rock edict that Andhras were his subordinates.
